Dulles,
VA September 18, 2008 – Encore Networks
today announced that the Alabama Municipal
Electric Authority (AMEA) has selected
Encore’s industrially hardened BANDIT™
for electrical SCADA monitoring and control
functions between its Montgomery hub and
member communities throughout Alabama.
The AMEA is a not-for-profit entity
created to provide its members with a
reliable and economical source of electric
power. To help accomplish this, the AMEA
provides economies of scale in the purchase
and installation of cutting edge technologies
including SCADA systems.
The BANDIT™ supports all variants of
the SCADA protocol, both bit- and byte-oriented,
with encryption of all traffic and complete
remote management capabilities. The hardened
construction of the BANDIT™ allows for
operation over the wide temperature ranges
found at remote utility sites.
“Our affiliate members required a high
performance network with more security
for their SCADA applications which until
now had been running over 56k Frame Relay,”
said Arthur Bishop, AMEA Senior Operations
Engineer. “With the Bandit we met these
demands by providing higher throughput
and strong encryption capabilities at
a lower cost while paving the way for
future network enhancements.”
The BANDIT™ is an industrially hardened
cyber security appliance with integrated
router, firewall, terminal server, serial-to-IP
conversion, legacy-protocol conversion,
and VPN functionality. The BANDIT™ ensures
secure system data and SCADA network
connections directly to the Internet,
secure Wide Area Network (WAN) and/or
Local Area Network (LAN), or commercial
cellular data IP services. Customers
have complete freedom to configure the
BANDIT™ to any transmission service as
either primary or backup including Frame
Relay, VSAT, cellular wireless, cable
modem, DSL, fiber, microwave and dial-up.
With its seamless host site diversification
failover feature, the BANDIT™ is ideal
for disaster recovery and application
load sharing to multiple host sites.
