Chantilly,
VA, February 16, 2010 —
Encore Networks today announced
that Norfolk Southern Railway
has selected Encore’s industrially
hardened (rugged) router, the
BANDIT-III™, for both Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP) and
Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR)
network solutions. The BANDIT-III™ provides reliable communications
between both the primary and
back-up Centralized Operations
facilities and rail yards and
remote way-stations throughout
the eastern United States. The
massive network upgrade operates
over a Frame Relay/MPLS backbone.
Norfolk Southern
Railway operates approximately
21,000 route miles in 22 states
and the District of Columbia. Norfolk
Southern Railway, a subsidiary
of Norfolk Southern Corporation,
serves every major container port
on the east coast, and provides
superior connections to western
rail carriers.
Encore’s BANDIT-III™ is an industrially hardened cyber
security router with an integrated
firewall, terminal server, serial-to-IP
conversion, legacy protocol conversion
and VPN functionality. Ideally
suited for transportation and SCADA
applications for electric, gas,
oil and water utilities, the BANDIT-III™ ensures secure, high-throughput
voice and data networking connections
directly to cellular, VSAT or terrestrial
networks. The hardened four wire
E&M Voice Interface Module
(VIM100) utilizes Encore’s value-added
compressed voice encapsulation
allowing Norfolk Southern to transport
E&M voice or VoIP over their
packet network efficiently.
“The BANDIT is purpose-built
for mission-critical network connectivity
in locations that may have few
to no environmental controls,”
said Matt Girard, Encore Networks
Senior Director of Business Development.
“Norfolk Southern’s acceptance
of our rugged technology validates
the strategy of targeting these
remote sites such as rail yards
and way stations which are located
in harsh environments.”
The Automatic Configuration
and Software feature in the BANDIT-III™ significantly simplifies the installation
process of large network deployments.
The plug-and-play installation
starts with simply powering up
the BANDIT-III™ at the remote site.
When a network connection is made,
Encore’s customized server software
is downloaded and configuration
is completed in minutes.
Mr. Girard continued, “Our unique
Automatic Configuration feature
is specifically designed with large
network installations such as Norfolk
Southern in mind. Each remote install
can be accomplished quickly, streamlining
the time and effort usually involved
in large deployments which ultimately
reduces costs.”
