Dulles, VA February
20, 2007 – Encore Networks
today announced that Orbital Data Net has
selected Encore’s VSR-30™ Virtual
Private Network (VPN) routers for the State
of Louisiana’s Department of Public
Safety emergency backup satellite network.
Built in response to the devastation and
resulting network outages experienced during
Hurricane Katrina, Orbital’s satellite
network will provide voice and data emergency
backup to locations throughout the Gulf region.
Post Katrina, communications between police
stations, emergency facilities and hospitals
were disrupted because many radio towers in
the path of the storm could only operate in
local mode as the State’s terrestrial
wide area T-1 circuits were destroyed. To
avoid this scenario in the future, Orbital
Data developed high-speed VSAT services that
include secure connections to the State’s
data center, as well as satellite circuits
that support Louisiana’s P25 land mobile
radio network. The VSAT service includes pre-positioned
as well as quick deploy antennas that can
easily be supported by one technician who
can re-point the antenna system with normal
hand tools and without electrical power. By
incorporating Encore’s VSR-30™,
with Selective Layer Encryption technology
(SLE), all data transported over the VSAT
service is secure and encrypted.
“We obviously can’t prevent
the destruction caused by hurricanes, but
we can plan for the inevitable disruption
of telecom services by installing satellite
systems that are either pre-positioned or
quickly deployed. They must also be easy to
operate and repair by technicians on the scene
under difficult circumstances,” stated
Greg Heifner, Orbital Data Net CEO. “With
Encore’s help, we can ensure the reliability
and security of emergency communications.”
Encore Network’s VSR™ security
products are versatile IP only VPN appliances
that support VSAT satellite enterprise data
networks with IPsec VPN, stateful inspection
firewall, IP routing and QoS and SLE. The
ability to perform SLE to IPsec tunnel switching
allows satellite operators to provide both
end-to-end on-net and off-net VPN solutions
over IP without the performance degradation
associated with satellite circuits and VPN
solutions.
“Utilizing a combination of VSR™ equipment
and the latest VSAT technology, Orbital Data
has produced a disaster recovery solution
that will expand over time to include even
more State emergency facilities along the
Gulf,” said Matthew Girard, Encore’s
Director of Satellite Market Development. “We
are excited to have been selected by Orbital
Data and the State of Louisiana and look forward
to our continuing involvement in this important
public safety project.”
