DATA FRAD SOFTWARE UPLOAD

PROCEDURE FOR UPLOADING DATA FRADS USING THE BOOT LOADER

Prerequisites

  • A PC running communication software at 38400 bps
  • The communication port configured for 38400 BPS, 8 data bits, No parity and 1 stop bit (38.4 k, 8,N,1)
  • Familiarity with ASCII as the upload format

Connections

1.
The first step in upgrading software on the FRAD is to connect the communications port of a PC running terminal emulation software to the FRAD's supervisory port. An RJ-45 cable and an RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter are provided with each FRAD for this purpose.

2.
Check the current code file to ensure that you are acquiring the correct version of code. To do this, access the FRAD's Main Menu by pressing Enter Type Y to access the System Administration menu. You will be required to enter your administration password (the default password is fastcomm). Select 2) Flash Memory Management, then 2) Flash Memory Map. The file name and version indicate the name of the file you need to download — e.g., F9drni.r1. The model number must match, as well as the region that will receive the new code. For example, if you want to load the code into Region 1, select the file with the .r1 extension; if you want to load code into Region 2, select the file with the .r2 extension.

3.
Locate the updated file from the Encore Networks ftp site that matches the file name displayed in Flash Memory map. Download this file to your hard drive.

Uploading

The Boot Loader is controlled by the use of menu options, which can be invoked during a power-up or reset. If the FRAD is already running, select Reset from the Main Menu. As the unit resets, the LEDs will cycle for a few seconds. The LEDs will then flash, alternating between red and green, for five seconds. During this time, you can interrupt the normal startup process by pressing ESC. The Boot Loader menu shown below will be displayed.

2. Press any key to continue

3. Press ESC to return to the Boot Loader menu.

NOTE: Check the region file name to be sure that it is the same as that of the file you downloaded from the FTP site. The version number will probably be different.

4.
Select Erase Code region #_ for the active code region. In this example, Region 1 is active even though it is listed as "secondary." Since there is no "pyrimar" region, the secondary region is active.

5.
Press ESC to return to Boot Loader menu then select Upgrade Code region #_ for the code region you just erased. You will be prompted to upload or send the file as shown in the example below.

Ready. Send S-Record file !

NOTE: The file to be loaded in Region #1 should have a .rx extension.

6.
Select the upload function in your PC terminal program, with ASCII set as the upload protocol. Select the file with the .r1 extension from the directory you unzipped earlier in this process. Uploading will begin, showing an incrementing byte counter as seen below.

Received file header OK!  50k bytes

When the upload has been completed, you will see the following message:

File reception complete and FLASH Programmed

7.
Press ... for Boot menu. Type ... to invoke the Boot Loader menu. You will receive another prompt as shown below. Press any key to see the menu.

Customization database and region info saved. Press any key.

8.
From the Boot Loader menu, check the Flash region setup report (from the Flash Memory Management menu) again to verify that the new code has been loaded in the appropriate region. Also note that the database to use for that region has the same number as the region.

9.
Select Exit Boot Loader to run the new code. From the Main Menu, select W to write the configuration and R to reset the unit. The FRAD will attempt to save the current configuration in the new code. If the previous code was significantly different, you may have to re-enter the configuration parameters.
